In a make up game from March 28th, the Massapequa Chiefs traveled to Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday, April 2nd to take on the Seahawks. These two teams played an extremely competitive game that wasn’t decided until the final seconds when senior midfielder Franny Donohue scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left on the clock to give the Seahawks a 7-6 win. Here’s the full recap of how Cold Spring Harbor came away victorious in this epoch showdown!

First Half

Cold Spring Harbor came out the gate playing together and in sync. They jumped out to an early lead in the game as the first goal was scored by a cutting Ava Tighe which was assisted by Kelly Callaghan. Shortly after they added a free-position goal by Hannah Van Son go ahead 2-0. It took some time for Massapequa to get things going, but they got on the board as Kimberly Greenblatt floated a pass inside to Caitlyn Dorman for their first goal. Moments later the Chiefs tied things up with Joely Caramelli finishing low-to-low off of the assist by Jess Giller. The Seahawks regained the lead once again with the connection of Callaghan and Tighe. Callaghan found Tighe wide open at the center of the cage for her second goal of the game to give them a 3-2 lead. Cold Spring Harbor once again gained a two goal lead thanks to Tighe scoring an unassisted goal for her third of the game to give her a first half hat-trick. Seahawks goalie Maya Soskin and Chiefs goalie Luchiana Cardello made timely saves down the stretch of the first half to keep it a 4-2 game going into halftime.

Second Half

In the second half it was Massapequa that struck first to get the game tied once again. The first of two goals was scored on a free-position shot by Caramelli to bring them within one, followed by Caramelli throwing a dime to Greenblatt for the quick stick goal to tie the game and give them new life. The way this game was trending meant Cold Spring Harbor had to answer, and they did with Tighe stinging a shot to the bottom left corner for her fourth goal of the game and a 5-4 lead for the Seahawks. It took only two minutes for the Chiefs to have an answer of their own. Giller once again connected on a pass to Caramelli for the equalizing goal and her third of the game. Then Giller threaded the needle to Caramelli who bounced in a shot which gave Giller her third assist, Caramelli her fourth goal and the Chiefs their first lead of the game at 6-5. Massapequa held a one goal lead late in the game and Cardello made a clutch save on a free-position shot by Van Son to keep them ahead. However the Seahawks ended up getting another free-position opportunity and Franny Donohue cashed in to tie the game at six. The ensuing draw was controlled by Cold Spring Harbor and they had an opportunity to score the go-ahead goal inside of two minutes. A big save by Cardello followed by defenders, Alexa Cirabisi and Mary Koster coming together to force a turnover gave the Chiefs a chance to have the final possession with 1:18 left on the clock. After a timeout taken by Massapequa they came out looking to potentially win the game, but a costly turnover gave the ball back to the Seahawks which put them back in the driver seat. They got the ball into their offensive end with 17 seconds on the clock and called timeout. Out of the timeout it was Donohue who had the ball in her stick up top and made her way through X for the wrap-around game winning goal! The 2.1 seconds left on the clock was only enough for a draw, and Cold Spring Harbor came way with a scintillating 7-6 win! The three Epoch Players of the game were Donohue, Tighe, and Soskin. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season and will play each other again in the final game of the regular season on May 9th. Next up for the Seahawks is a matchup against Long Beach on April 4th while the Chiefs will be in action that same day against Wantagh.
