In an intense and closely fought lacrosse match, Wantagh demonstrated remarkable resilience and fight to secure a narrow 9-8 victory over Smithtown West. The game started with Smithtown West establishing what appeared to be a comfortable lead of 6-1, with notable contributions from players like Rutgers commit Kate Thefield, and sophomore Alyssa Lorefice who helped the Bulls get off to a strong start.
Wantagh, however, refused to buckle under pressure. Sienna Diglio the UMass commit emerged as a key player, orchestrating a significant comeback with her scoring prowess. The match was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts, ultimately leading to Wantagh’s impressive comeback from a five goal deficit to seal the 9-8 win in a dramatic finish. This game was a testament to the spirit and determination of both teams, highlighting the competitive nature of lacrosse at this level.
For the Warriors who lived up to their name, Diglio provided four goals with one assist and three ground balls. Juliana Cerasi the JMU commit was once again in control on the draw circle, and added a goal along with two assists. The game-tying and game-winning goals were scored by fellow sophomores with Madeline Drago scoring the tying goal, and Sabrina Asadurian scoring the game winner on an eight meter shot with four minutes remaining. In the second half they also managed to get key saves from sophomore Madeline Gonzalez to keep the momentum in their favor.
For Smithtown West, in addition to the big games from Theofield and Lorefice, Jolie Schiavo the JMU commit filled up the box score across the board, along with Allie Given the Merrimack commit with a goal and two ground balls, and Binghamton bound Grace Theofield recording a ground ball and two caused turnovers.
Next up for Wantagh is matchup against the St. Anthony’s 2024 team this Thursday night at 8:45. Smithtown West is back at it on Sunday afternoon for their week 3 matchup against Huntington at 2:30.
